Dubai London Clinic hosts interactive mums morning at Villa Centro

Dubai mums gathered at Dubai London Clinic Villa Centro late last month for an insightful closed-door discussion on all things oral health and gynaecology.

During the interactive event, doctors from the clinic offered advice on the child vaccine regime, dental health for both children and adults, and the importance of regular breast screening.

Speaking on the controversies that have recently made the headlines surrounding vaccinations, Dr. David Egbert – specialist paediatrician at DLC, spoke of his personal experiences in dealing with cases in both the UAE and Canada that have reaffirmed his belief in the effectiveness of various vaccinations. “If you’re considering the first flu vaccination for your baby, it can be given any time after reaching the age of six months,” he said. “The first vaccine requires two shots, one month apart – subsequently after this, the vaccination should be conducted annually.”

Dr. Nuno Sarmento, general dentist, spoke next and discussed tips to instil a healthy dental regime in both children and adults. He advised that to reduce the build up of bacterial plaque, teeth should be brushed after every meal using a fluoride toothpaste. If this is not possible, he suggested chewing a sugar-free gum or washing your mouth out with fluoride mouthwash after meals.

Finally, Dr. Nada Altabara, a gynaecology specialist with more than 20 years’ experience, spoke very timely about the importance of breast screening, ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness month this October. She reaffirmed the need to build awareness and advised mums to “know what is normal for you” when conducting self-examinations, but to notify doctors of any abnormalities as soon as possible. She also stated that clinical breast exams, conducted by a doctor, should be carried out yearly from the age of 20, with mammograms recommended every two years after reaching the age of 40.

Two lucky mums walked away with fabulous raffle prizes as the event drew to a close; Duaa Al Haddad was gifted a Dhs1000 voucher to use on cosmetic dental treatment at Dubai London Clinic, and Emily Turnbull won a one-year Mother, Baby & Child magazine subscription.
