International Day of the Girl was set up by 2012 by the United Nations. The day was established to emphasise the specific hurdles and challenges young girls face around the world. According to the organization, “the day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.”

The focus for the 2017-2018 project is “girls in crisis”. Women and girls account for 75% of refugees worldwide, and more likely to fall victim to sexual abuse and exploitation during war, and in refugee camps. The United Nations will be focusing international attention on the plight of girls before, after and during a crisis.
